Sifrovani hesel
  * Standardne – 25–krokovy DES, 2 znaky sul, zbytek heslo. Knihovnı funkce – crypt(3).
  * Jine metody – MD5, RC4, IDEA, DSS.
Ukladani hesel
  * Standardni UNIX – hesla jsou vystavena utoku hrubou silou (John the Ripper) a slovnıkovemu utoku (crack(8)).
  * Shadow passwords – hesla a dalsı udaje jsou ulozeny v souboru /etc/shadow. Omezenı hesla na urcity cas, omezenı frekvence zmeny hesla. Nutnost set-uid/gid u pogramu, pracujıcıch s hesly.
